Sail off safely with these tips in hand.
Summer is officially here, meaning that many boaters in New York are getting ready for a season of sailing. If you are one of them, be sure that you are well prepared! Check out these safety tips before you set off.
Prepare the boat. Before you even go out on the water, ensure that your boat is up for the journey. If needed, obtain a vessel check to ensure all is well maintained.
Be weather wise. Always check local weather conditions before you depart. If you notice darkening clouds or rough winds, play it safe by getting off the water.
Avoid alcohol. Practice safe boating at all times. When alcohol is involved, boaters are more likely to be involved in an accident. Instead, save a cold beer for when you return to shore and are back on land.
Gather the right kit. You will need to ensure that you have the right safety equipment on board, whether it’s just you heading out on the water or a handful of your friends and family. Ensure there are plenty of lifejackets, a first aid kit, a marine radio, fire extinguisher, water, and visual distress signals.
Take a boating course. Beginner boaters and experts alike need to be familiar with the boating safety rules of operation. Ensure that you know basic safety requirements and procedures before you head out on the water.
Review boat insurance. A large percentage of boat owners in New York do not have proper insurance coverage that would provide them financial protection and add to their peace of mind this boating season.
A boat insurance policy often includes:
- Property coverage
- Liability coverage
- Medical payments coverage
- Uninsured watercraft coverage
Coverage can also cover the extras on your boat, including but not limited to:
- Depth finding gear
- Audio equipment
- Video equipment
- Water skis
- Floatation devices
