How to review Motor Vehicle Records (MVRs)

  • Is the license valid/active? Determine that the license is valid of the type of vehicle they will be operating.
  • Does the driver have more than 3 years of driving experience?
  • Do they meet their insurance carrier’s specific criteria regarding violations and accident history?  Each carrier is a little different.
  • Does the driver meet your company’s driver requirements? (Your company should have a written policy that includes driver history guidelines.  Contact your account manager for help building a policy or evaluating current policies.)

Compare their Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) to acceptability criteria before they drive and again on an annual basis. Where possible, you should request a five-year MVR.
