The new year is the perfect time to review your insurance coverage.
As the calendar turns from 2018 to 2019, it is likely that you will be thinking of New Year’s resolutions. Whether you vow to quit smoking, lose weight, or save money, we recommend you start off with at least one easy resolution: checking your current insurance policies.
Reviewing your coverage can help you save money and align your policies with your current needs. Additionally, identifying a new discount on your current policy or finding a new coverage that you can benefit from will help you save money and stay protected.
To get started, gather each of your insurance policies, whether it be auto, home, renters, flood, business, boat, umbrella, or otherwise. Most of the information you will need will be on the declarations page for each policy:
- Amount of coverage
- Insurable assets
Think about how your life has changed over the past few months/year. Did you buy high-value items? Change jobs? Is your older vehicle losing value to the point where you can drop some coverage?Talk to your insurer about how your new needs should fit in with your insurance policies.
Next, take a look at your deductibles. Could you save a bit more money every month by raising your deductible? Keep in mind if you do so, it will mean committing to pay this cash out-of-pocket in the event of a claim.
