The 7th Annual Elmira Street Painting Festival is fast approaching in Downtown Elmira. This family friendly event began in the summer of 2008 and has become a local tradition ever since. This summer signature weekend event allows locals to rediscover the city of Elmira and foster awareness to our local restaurants, stores, and businesses.
July 19th from 10:00am – 10:00pm
July 20th from 10:00pm – 4:00pm
Both local and regional artists take control of the streets of downtown Elmira, transforming the basic pavements into a beautiful art display; the pavement is their canvas. All artists must create their beauty with chalk in this amazing event featuring talented local and regional artists. There will be live entertainment featuring local musicians and bands.
The art of street painting can be attributed to the 16th Century Italians who called themselves “madonnaros,” because their early creations were typically of Madonna. Street painting traveled to the United States in the mid 1980’s and can now be interpreted widely amongst multiple communities. While street painting began as a religious art, it now acts as a very complex form of self-expression.
Children are free to enjoy themselves at the Kid’s Kanvas area that allows youth to partake in a multitude of activities including face-painting, ice cream, popcorn, Bobby K entertainment, Leslie School of Dance Kids Activities, Zumba Dancing, and more.
With so many activities going on throughout the event, there is fun to be had for every member of your family. You can watch as these talented artists create masterpieces right before your eyes with a piece of chalk. Whether you come for the entire weekend or stop by one of the days, this is an event you won’t want to miss.
